RSS & Twitter for Bitpick

twitbitpick
Over the past day or so Ive added a few updates to bitpick.org that are worth noting, so note I shall. First off Ive added download pages instead of direct links this is in preparation for a very large update that will be coming in the near future. I also added some links so you can directly share links to facebook and twitter from the download page. Today I added an RSS feed for new movies and a twitter user you can follow to get all the most recent movies posted sent directly to your favorite twitter client. HINT: the RSS feed is actually our twitter RSS feed, so you could just follow us on twitter at twitter.com/bitpick and get one degree of separation closer to us.

I just finished sprucing up the SweetFire band myspace page. Check it out, buy some of there tracks. There an amazing band out of Waterloo, Ont. With a heavy classic sound, so give them some internet love.

update | bitpick.org

bitdate
Today was a big update day for bitpick, I rolled out a couple of updates that are bits of what my grand vision for this site will be. The biggest change to the site is Ive now opened it up for user submissions. So if you want a movie on the site that we dont have, or you’ve found a better version of a movie you can now submit it to us for review. If your torrent is the bee’s knee’s we’ll accept it and index it, otherwise into the garbage it goes. This should speed up the amount of new content we add considerably. Also Ive added a couple of pages to help you discover some new content, youll see in the sidebar links to the 50 most recent additions to the site, 50 random picks, and 50 top picks.

Im working on a major revision to the bitpick.org, that will do some really interesting stuff with content discover and mashing it with social networking. I dont want to give away to many details but the update will be rolled out later this week.

Two days ago I got to thinking about bittorrent, the pirate bay trial, and in general what a wild west it is for the entire bittorrent community is in. With viruses, trojans, fakes, crappy versions, and a general lack of standards amoung rating and posting of torrents, I thought what if we added an ‘editorial layer’ as it were to the whole process. So selecting say a movie for example then looking at all the torrent files and selecting the best copy that would surfice for the general community. Taking what Mahalo did for human powered search and applying it to bittorrent, and out came bitpick.

With 2 days of coding and inputting torrents I am proud to say my vision has come to fruition. There is currently about 500 movies index on the site, all the best SD versions of each movie. Eventually we will begin indexing HD content but because of the amount of content we need to index, we just dont have the bandwidth right now. TV-shows and music will coming to, but right now our focus is on refining our search and stabilizing the site. Everyday I hope to add 50 or so new items, and more as the site traffic increases.

There is a big lingering question about this service is the legality of it all. We dont host, track, or store any content, we simply index it much like what Google or any other search engine would do. As far as I can tell we shouldnt have any legal barkings for at least a little while. If you have any questions or comments about this you can use my contact information provided on the sidebar.

fitbit

I first heard about the fitbit when it launched at the Techcrunch 50 a few months ago. The fitbit is like a step counter on web 2.0 steroids, it tracks the number of calories you burn in a day, and the quality of sleep you get. Then it takes all the data and blasts it into the cloud onto there social fitness site. It then tracks your progress and gives all you kinds of graphs of your progress and has a feed of all your friends exercise habbits. The release date for the fitbit is late this spring and is available for pre-order. The release date was moved back from last xmas though, so fingers crossed this launches.
