iphone development experiment | day 1

Picture 4
Day 1 of my 5 day iphone experiment is done. To fill everyone in who doesn’t know Im trying to build a complete iPhone game in 5 days with no previous experience developing for the iPhone. So today I designed all the art work for the game, created and programmed the opening menu to the game. I also found a very nice 2d framework called Cocos2d that has already sped along development. Cocos2d has a very nice integrated universal physics engine, so I can simply set the gravity or lack there of in a heart beat. The list of functions in the framework is very impressive and its implemented in a very simple, elegant manner. I also found various projects that incorporate different elements of what Im trying to create so with all luck Ill have a complete prototype by tomorrow night. The big hurdles for tomorrow will be sound design, getting all the sound effects and background music ready; Integrating user touch and collision detection on the walls and other objects. If everything goes smoothly tomorrow Ill have screenshots and maybe even a video of the project, along with a full explanation of exactly what Im building.

favorite iphone games

In preparation for the development of my lastest project, Ive been wasting far to much time on my iPod touch. I thought I would share 3 games that consume the better part of my free time, when Im not programming. Also I hope to complete my first iPhone game by the end of this week, Ill post details and screenshots later this week as I get more of the game completed.

FieldRunners
Developed by Subatomic studios based in Oregon, USA. FieldRunners is a ‘Tower Defense’ game, where enemies try to get from one side of the map to another and your job is to place towers in the way to stop them. The game is very polished with nicely detailed sprites and a very simple interface. Theres no breaks between rounds so the game flows seamlessly, also a very nice features is the ability to ‘fast forward’ the game so you can bang through rounds twice as fast.

Rolando
This title from ngmoco is a smash hit on the iPhone. The games premiss is simple, try to get your ‘Rolandos’ to the exit of the level by using the simple tilt controls to roll your little minions across the terrain. For anyone familiar with LocoRoco on the PSP this will be all to familiar.

Flight Control
This is the perfect example for iPhone gaming, its gaming in quick bursts, with simple gameplay based around one simple concept, landing planes. Each level puts a bunch of different landing strips on the ground, each for a different type of aircraft and then just bombards you with planes and you try to land as many as you can without letting any crash. This game is super addicting and for $0.99 its a no brainer.

mobile loosecannon

Picture 1
Its a very rainy day here in Muskoka, its been pouring for the past 10 hours with little sign of stopping. Ive been monkeying around with my brothers iPod touch and decided to create a mobile version of the loosecannon. So now if you goto loosecannon.ca on nearly any mobile device you can browse and comment with much greater ease then before. The site dosnt look as fancy but Im gonna work on that.

mobile movies and a new project

picture-11Today we’ve added a new ‘mobile movies’ category to BitPick. So now you can load up your iPhone, iPod, PSP, or Zune with your favorites and take them with you where ever you want. We are launching with 115 titles and will be expanding that library daily. Im also working on a new project, I cant reveal many details yet, but it will related to music, and it will work in tandem with Aralie and it will be more targeted towards the business end of things. I post more details in the next couple of days as the site gets closer to launch.
